Exeter, Devon,

I was born in 1944. I had early interests in drawing, writing, photography, and architecture. After my formal education at first in English, History and Philosophy and later in Economics, Business Law and Management, I began what turned out to be a long career in industrial design, engineering, and manufacturing in Canada. I still found time to draw and paint during my travels. I moved from Canada to the U.K. in 1987. In 2007, I moved from London to Devon in order to paint full time.

I primarily paint expressionistic landscapes of the West Country and wherever my travels take me. All of my paintings begin en plein air and the larger works are
then completed in my studio. My paintings are concerned with balancing close observation and structure with emotional, visceral responses to the landscape. My goal is to make paintings which are physically exciting and therefore, involve experiment and risk taking.

I conduct painting courses ("The Landscape As Power and Emotion") throughout the year in various locations. Click here for course details.

In March 2014, I was elected Academician, The South West Academy (SWAc).

In March 2017, I was awarded "Landscape Painter of the Year" by Devon Life

I exhibit regularly with the South West Academy and am represented by several galleries in the U.K. from Kent to Cornwall as well as in Holland, Switzerland and the U.S.A.
